Observing Native American Heritage Month 2022

November marks the beginning of Native American Heritage Month and we celebrate and honor the proud ancestors of the first peoples who inhabit this land.

Today and every day we honor the nine federally recognized tribes of Oregon: the Burns Paiute Tribe; the Confederated Tribes of Coos, Lower Umpqua and Siuslaw Indians; the Coquille Indian Tribe; the Cow Creek Band of Umpqua Tribe of Indians; the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde; the Klamath Tribes; the Confederated Tribes of Siletz; the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation; and the Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs.

We also honor those tribes seeking federal recognition.

The land Oregon occupies precedes today’s defined boundaries and even the word ‘Oregon’. We continue to acknowledge the original inhabitants whose cultures, traditions, and contributions helped form the places and customs around us.

Additionally, we also ask that you honor the indigenous heritage behind our own Hispanic and Latinx identities and the cultural practices, languages, and intergenerational wisdom that have been passed down to us by our ancestors.

We invite you to learn more about the rich culture and multiple contributions that Native American communities have blessed us with.
