Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service 2023

As we approach MLK Day, we invite our staff, allies, and community partners to spend time serving and reflecting on the work of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., his wise words, and our collective resilience.

Martin Luther King Day was first officially celebrated on Monday, January 10th, 1986. Congress then designated the holiday as a national day of service, making every third Monday of January as Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service, a “Day On, Not a Day Off”.

The need for community efforts continues as we enter the third year of the Covid-19 pandemic. Coming together is important for ensuring the safety and success of our community as a whole. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. once said, “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is: What are you doing for others?”

At Latino Network, our work stems from the core belief in the self-determination of the Latino community. We work alongside our society - whether it’s early education services, youth empowerment, closing the education gap experienced by students of color or advocating for equitable legislation intended to uplift those who have been historically underserved. The work of Dr. King resonates in everything that we do and echoes our organization’s mission, which is to positively transform the lives of Latinx youth and adults in Oregon.

We encourage everyone to honor the life and legacy of Dr. King and volunteer this weekend; check out some opportunities in your area in the links below!
